A lesson from Warren Buffet

Nov 19, 2024

What's up legend I hope you crushed Monday.

I'm sat here typing this with the most agonising neck pain possible after annoying a nerve in the gym earlier.

It's all fun and games until you can only look to the left.

If you're going to mug me in the next few days,

Coming from the right will be you best chance πŸ˜‚

Enough about me, here's Warren Buffet instead...

A lesson from Warren Buffet

I wrote about this last week on LinkedIn but I wanted to expand on it a little here.

Expand on what Mark? I don't follow you on LinkedIn.

First of all, go follow me here if you're not doing so already because I share a lot of awesome content.

Secondly, I'm referring to the speech Warren Buffet made to a class of students a few years ago.

Let me share the transcript with you.

Warren Buffet...

“I'm gonna let each one of you pick out the car of your choice. Pick it out any colour, you name it. It'll be at your house tomorrow. And you say, well, what's the catch? It's the only car you're going to get in your lifetime! Now, what are you going to do, knowing that that's the only car you're ever going to have? You'll love that car, You're going to take care of it like you cannot believe! Now, you're not going to get only one car in your lifetime, But you’re only going to get one body and one mind. That body and mind, feels terrific now, But it has to last you a lifetime.”

What a bloody G!

On top of being one of the greatest businesspeople around,

He's also super clued in about the importance of health.

Just imagine his hypothetical situation for a minute.

I mean imagine it because I want you to sit for a few minutes with that image in your head.

Imagine if you were given a car at 18 and told this is you til the day you die.

This is the only car you will EVER have!

Now imagine yourself going through life as you have.

What amount of care and attention would you give to that car?

Would you treat it with more respect?

Would you service it on the day it needs it?

Unless you had driving, and cars in general,

I'm going to hedge my bets and say your answers would go something like this:

- I'd show that car a crazy amount of attention to detail and tender loving care!

- I'd treat it with the utmost respect that it deserves!

- I'd never miss a service appointment!

Safe to say you'll take pretty good care of that car, wouldn't you say?

So answer me this then...

WHY DO PEOPLE NOT DO THE SAME WITH THEIR BODY?!

Yes, I brought out the bold capital letters but this is some serious shit and I need to get my point across.

Newsflash,

Your body is more valuable than any car on this planet.

Yes I know there are some expensive whips out there,

But if you were to ask a billionaire on his deathbed to trade in his fancy cars for greater health,

You best bet he's handing those keys over.

The older I get the more I'm coming to terms with the finite nature of life.

I'm 33 now, trying to build a business, engaged to my awesome fiancé, living in sunny Barcelona with our dog, and loving my life,

But I'm very well aware that it isn't going to last forever,

As much as I want it to.

(Starting to go slightly off-piste here but we're rolling with it.)

I think it's important that we face up to mortality.

I'm not telling you to sit there and think about death because f**k me I'm certainly not doing that.

Rather, I think it's important that each one of us is aware that our time here isn't infinite,

And more to the point,

It ain't guaranteed.

I kinda went off track but the point I'm making is simple.

Please do what you can to maximise your time on this planet.

  • Strength train
  • Eat mindfully
  • Live an active life
  • Maintain a good body weight
  • Manage your stress
  • Get enough sleep

Habits that will give you more quality of life on this planet.

Because remember...

It's not the years in your life that matter,

It's the life in your years that do.

I think this email 'worked',

Pop me a reply if it did.

Quote for the day

"If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of"

I'm really on one today with the ole making the most of life thing.

But it's something I'lll never tire of.

I'm in coaching to give people more life in the lives,

So they can make the most of it with their loved ones!

- Mark
